Jean Daniel Michel

From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank each and everyone that helped make the September trip to Haiti a success. God worked marvelous miracles through this trip. It started with an issue with my name and the way it was presented on my ticket. Because of that, I ended up having to stay in Port-au-Prince overnight. A family of 4 which happen to be my relatives were able to have a great relief from my unscheduled entrance into Port-au-Prince. It was purely Gods work because It was not my intention to visit nor have my family aware I was in Haiti. My family was going on 3 days without food. Their hope and faith was disappearing. God directed me unintentionally to Port-au-Prince to help restore their hope and faith. The security around the area where they sleep was very poor. They sleep in a fallen tent. When it rains they all get wet. However, God dispatched his angels to encamp round about to protect my family and me. As a result, the next day, I went on and continued the mission to Cap Haitien where Guy Buckmaster and I reunited. God continued his wonderful works through us. We were able to witness and touch many lives. We visited, listened, and worked with many missionaries that were also on the ground. It was a remarkable experience meeting Dr. Leo and the crew that works with him, Agronomist Frantz Pierre and his fiance’. We were truly blessed by a group of orphans who sang for us and touched our hearts in an unforgettable way. We discussed about the project on the ground and how to implement everything to be very effective to the people in the community. We had a positive meeting with Archbishop Louis Kebreau and we look forward to continuing to work with him diligently. In addition, we met with the Rotary Club at Cap Haitien – Dr. Jean-Rony. They are determined to work with us to help touch lives in Haiti. We made great attempt to speak to the Digicel foundation. Even though we did not get a chance to speak with an advisory at that time, we have a tremendous contact which will facilitate that process. Words cannot express the effect this trip has made in my heart. The work of God started to open before me in Cap Haitien, and will evenly replicate all over Haiti.

Coffee served up hot!

Coffee served up hot - with price increase likely!

There is interest amongst CFI with the recent reporting about coffee price surging due to past year harvest performance and continuing demand growth despite economic pressures on world wide consumer purchasing.   A pound of Arabica is going for $1.90 a pound wholesale today.  That’s a 41 percent increase since June 2010!  Folgers and Dunkin Donuts raised the price of their “Grocery Store Joe” by 10 percent this week.  The increase is due to a rough growing season for beans, and an increase in the number of people drinking coffee. Experts say supply has not kept pace with demand.

Coffee futures have traded as high as $1.848 a pound—the highest level since December 1997. While commodities futures are most commonly used as a financial instrument to mitigate price volatility, they can become a source of physical supply, especially in times of relative scarcity.

In Brazil’s spot market, good-quality arabica coffee, which allows for defects in some of the beans, was recently trading at about 330 Brazilian reals per 60-kilogram bag, compared with 230 to 240 reals a year ago as reported.  The current Brazilian spot price is roughly equivalent to $1.42 a pound, which doesn’t include transportation costs.

Coffee Futures August 2010High-quality arabica coffee that has undergone an arduous washing process fetches around 380 to 400 reals a bag, or about $1.68 a pound.  But some growers are waiting for even higher prices.

Coffee prices are likely to ease from their recent elevated levels once the new 2010 to 2011 crop is available and supply concerns wane, the International Coffee Organization (ICO) said last week.

Despite the arrival on the market of a new coffee crop from Brazil—with 2010 to 2011 set to be a high production year in the biennial arabica cycle—short-term supply problems continue to stimulate a drawing down of world stocks coffee.

Global consumption has grown at a pace of 2.5 percent per year. To put that into perspective, the world’s consumption of coffee has grown from 104 million bags of coffee beans in 2000 to 135 million bags this year.

Coffee production didn’t rise to meet the demand, resulting in a spike in prices. Bad weather in some coffee producing countries hurt the harvest. Osorio said that rains and climate conditions reduced Colombia’s coffee bean production to 8 million bags the last two years. Typically, the country produces 11 million bags.

Coffee, number two world commodity

Coffee, number two world commodity

The scarce coffee crop is a far cry from the period between 2000 and 2005 when coffee producing countries had a surplus of beans. Prices were low and stocks of coffee beans were piling up.

Now, coffee suppliers have been forced to delve into their once growing stockpiles.  Some fluctuation in coffee prices is normal, but this high is historic and it could have staying power.

We watch the coffee prices as we enter into our beginning stage of coffee harvest and process implementation for CFI’s mission at Plaine du Nord, Haiti.  To learn more about our vision, see COMMUNITY VISION at the Catmon Foundation website.

C.E.M.P. School at Plaine du Nord

C.E.M.P. School located at the CFI mission in Plaine du Nord, Haiti

Grand news was received this morning from Plaine du Nord! Praise God Dr. Leo called gleaming with the news that every single student from C. E. M. P. (our CFI supported mission school) passed the governmental examinations required for passage and graduation! Another victory was announced too! C. E. M. P. scored the highest of all schools in the district – Alleluia! The results are simply astounding and a testament to the faithful effort and perseverance under the conditions of the past academic year! We are very proud that the christian teacher staff and the administration of the school weathered the storms of the past year well! Not only did they manage well, they excelled!

We have requested Dr. Leo pass along our heartfelt gratitude and praise in recognition of their efforts and performance as reflected in our children through their high performance level at examination!  When we consider the past year and the strife of the earthquake, the damage to the school, the required closure and repair period, funding required to get repairs completed, plus the significant payment shortfall that we still owe to date, it is miraculous and with Christ like determination that Dr. Leo’s staff went forward with vigor and made such a blessing of accomplishment!  Father God we are so humbled by the learning of this milestone and accomplishment for these children.  To provide a quality retained educational experience is known to be a stepping stone out of economical oppression!

Our students

Our students

We have seen our Father continue to care for His people.  He is working in and through them as we witness the astounding academic and personal growth of our brothers and sisters even when we have failed them in our obligation to support the ministry’s primary focus, education with Biblical precepts to reduce the effects of ignorance, oppression and despair.  We need to heed this call to support this vital ministry.

Deut. 15:7. If there is a poor man among you, one of your brothers, in any of the towns of the land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart, nor close your hand to your poor brother; but you shall freely open your hand to him, and generously lend him sufficient for his need in whatever he lacks.

Mt. 5:42. Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you.

James 2:5. Did not God choose the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?

We see and understand as our Father’s  message here is really very simple: help the needy.  It’s not hard to understand; it’s just hard to do.   The message is continuous.  It’s in the Torah; it’s in the Prophets and Psalms; it’s in the Gospels; it’s in the Epistles. How many churches emphasize serving the poor as much as the Bible itself does?  Would the world look the way it does if all believers followed these commands?

Who are the poor, by the way?  Among our rationalizations is the feeling that the actual poor aren’t people we really have to pay attention to.   They may be of different races, or not speak our language, or aren’t moral enough for us!

God doesn’t want to hear excuses; He specifically commands us to help the stranger, the alien, the sojourner.  Jesus’ command on dinner parties couldn’t be clearer: the people you need to help are not the people like you, the people you like, the people who can repay you.  As for racial prejudice, note that the first person in the gospel of John to whom Jesus clearly confesses to being the Messiah is a Samaritan; Samaritans were despised by the orthodox Jews of the time. (And for that matter, she was a woman, and an adulterer.)

“Pleading the cause” of the poor, being their advocate and defender, is simply something we choose to do.  We pray your Heart for Haiti is shinning bright and that you are compelled to help.  You can see here, you can touch through CFI’s ministries, you can impact here,  you can reach the poor of Haiti who need you to help them.  Won’t you take a moment to pray about how you might be able to help these loving and deserving people.

It is said that pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit, help, and care for the orphans and widows in their affliction and need, and to keep oneself unspotted and uncontaminated from the world.     James 1:27

We seek the spreading of the good news of Jesus Christ through extensive prayer, monetary contributions, hope, education, our labor and love to a nation engulfed in Voodoo, Witchcraft, poverty and injustice.
